Profit driven corporations have left millions of Americans without affordable and reliable access to broadband
Americans without access to affordable broadband are predominantly working class people and people of color. Deregulation of the telecommunications industry has only made these inequalities worse. The private sector has failed to deliver universal broadband.
Access to universal, high-speed, reliable, and affordable broadband is urgently needed in Texas for work, education and hospitals. This need has only become more urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Investing in broadband also represents an opportunity to create good quality jobs AND better internet for communities in Texas, stimulating economic growth. We must also make sure that investments in broadband benefit workers and communities, not just a corporation's bottom line.
Just like in the 1930's the government plays a critical role in establishing regulations and oversight to guarantee that all Americans have access to basic public services and utilities - whether it be electricity, water or communications.
